History.

The Grayling Fish Hatchery in Crawford County, was founded in 1914 by Rasmus Hanson, who obatined the property originally through timber rights.  In 1916, he formed a group of outdoors men called the Grayling Fish Hatchery Club (GFHC).  The men belonging to the clup were among the first in Michigan to recognize the need to reinforce natural trout reproduction in our streams by hatching and rearing the fish in protected ponds. The original pupose was to save the nearly extinct Grayling fish, once so prevalent to the AuSable River. Although that effort failed, the GFHC successfully planted Brook and Brown Trout in the River System. After ten years of operation, the Grayling Fish Hatchery was sold to the State of Michigan in 1926 for $10,000.  State operated until the late 1960's, the hatchery laid dormant until 1983.

From 1983 to 1993, the Grayling Fish Hatchery Committee, under the direction of the Crawford County Board of Commissioners, drew an average of 38,000 tourist each summer.  In 1994, the Grayling Recreation Authority continued its operation. The Hatchery remains open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. At present 7 ponds have approximately 30,000 trout in a variety of sizes ranging from fingerlings to trophy fish. The on site sale of fish food permits the public to feed the trout.
